Flatstone @ Nisa Ffos-y-ffin

We spoke to Emyr Jones the owner of Nisa Ffos-y-ffin near Aberaeron - Wales. He recently spotted a great opportunity within his store and decided to launch Flastone pizza!

‘I work closely with Country Choice at my other stores, where they supply me with a range of in-store bakery and food-to-go items, but with this being a bigger site, with greater footfall and a significant transient customer base, I wanted to introduce a more adventurous food-to-go offer, including burgers, chips, and pizzas.

‘I tried a pizza concept some years ago at one of my other stores, but it didn’t really have the footfall required to make it a viable option - and it was nowhere near as straightforward to operate as Flatstone Pizza Co. It’s the simplicity of it, as well as the quality of the end product obviously, that attracted me to it and make it such a great proposition. All the ingredients are delivered ready to use, all we have to do is “build” the pizzas and put them in the oven. It really is that easy!

‘During the summer months, when we were busiest, we averaged around 15-20 pizzas per day, sometimes hitting as many as 30 at peak times. With minimal preparation time, and little skill required to create the pizzas, the margins of 45%-50% make Flatstone Pizza Co. a really strong option for us, as they would do for any store that has a reasonable level of footfall.

‘The Ffos-y-ffin store was fitted out from scratch, so we were able to build in the necessary space for all of our food-to-go preparation, but the amount required for creating the pizzas is minimal so any retailer who already has an area set aside for preparation could very easily add Flatstone Pizza Co. to their offer, without needing to add either extra space or extra staff.
